Apple is expected to launch two new iPads — the iPad 5 and iPad mini 2 — at an event next week in San Francisco. As usual, the rumor mill has cranked out a lot of speculation surrounding the next-generation tablets, as well as buzz around other possible product announcements, including a new MacBook Pro line.

But what we'll see for sure will remain a mystery until Tuesday. Will the iPad mini get its first "retina" display, despite rumors that suggest the supply chain is holding up the process? How about Apple's new fingerprint sensor Touch ID making its way to the tablets? And what about a few surprises?
Here's a look at the biggest rumors circulating the web about Apple's Oct. 22 event, and what we might actually see debut next week. Whatever happens, you can be sure Mashable will be live on the scene to bring you the up-to-the-second developments. Until them, digest these rumors and speculate away!
1. iPad Mini With Retina Display
Rumor: The new 7.9-inch iPad mini will get its first "retina" display.
Plausibility: One of the main rumors surrounding the Apple event is whether or not the iPad mini 2 will include a "retina" display, possibly matching the big-screen iPad's pixel count of 2,048 x 1,536. But this feature isn't a given. Various sites indicate supplies of such high-resolution displays may be too limited, so retina might not come to the iPad mini until early 2014. This is probably the biggest tossup heading into the event.

2. Lighter, Thinner iPads
Rumor: Both the iPad mini and standard-sized iPad will get a slimmed-down design.
Plausibility: The fifth-generation iPad is rumored to be lighter and thinner (with a thinner bezel) than its predecessor. There's been enough leaked pictures of this -- as well as images of a slimmer iPad mini -- to make us think this probably what we'll see on Tuesday.

3. Faster iPads
Rumor: Following in the footsteps of the iPhone 5S and its super-fast A7 chip, the iPads will get a 64-bit processor too.
Plausibility: It seems likely that Apple will upgrade its iPad models with a faster processor. Although an A7 chip for the iPad 5 is a natural step, it might be too big of a leap for the iPad mini right now, which is currently running A5. There's a good chance we will see the A6X processor on the mini instead, which is what the iPad 4 is already running.

4. Touch ID
Rumor: The iPad 5 will get its own Touch ID fingerprint sensor.
Plausibility: One of the most discussed new features of the iPhone 5S was its fingerprint sensor, which allows you to unlock the device with the touch of your finger. French website NoWhereElse.fr -- which has a good track record for reporting Apple specs ahead of launches -- posted pictures of the Touch ID feature embedded within what looks like an iPad 5. iPad mini pictures with the fingerprint sensor have popped up on Chinese site Zol.com.cn, but some believe these are staged. If either device has a shot at Touch ID, it would be the iPad 5 but even that isn't a shoe-in. Apple might want to keep the feature exclusive to the 5S.

5. Colors!
Rumor: Space gray, silver and gold colors are coming to the iPads.
Plausibility: It would make sense for Apple to keep things consistent after debuting these new colors on the iPhone 5S. Pictures have been floating around that show Apple is leaning in this direction, but those images could easily be doctored too. However, Sonny Dickson -- a teen who has gotten his hands on leaked Apple details in the past -- posted pictures of the iPad mini in space gray, so chances seem likely.

6. New Smart Covers
Rumor: Apple will roll out new smart covers.
Plausibility: Apple's invite to the event features the tag line "we still have a lot to cover." The company loves to hint at what's to come with invitation wordplay, and some believe "cover" is quite literal. If the full-size iPad indeed gets a slimmer design, there's a good chance a new smart cover will come with it.

7. Improved Camera
Rumor: The iPad 5 will get a camera upgrade with a 8-megapixel sensor, as well as new features.
Plausibility: The iPhone 5S just got a massive overhaul with its iSight camera. Rumors reveal the iPad 5 could will receive a camera with an 8-megapixel sensor, up from 5MP in the latest models. Similar to the iPhone 5S, the aperture is expected to get better, too, which would enhance detail and produce less grainy photos. It's likely we will see some of the 5S advanced camera features make its way to the iPad too, including slow-motion filming, which allows you to select a part of the film to be played back at a slower speed.

8. MacBook Pro Retina Upgrade
Rumor: Apple will launch a new MacBook Pro line with "retina" display.
Plausibility: iPads aren't the only devices expected to take the stage. The MacBook Pro line is due for an upgrade and industry chatter indicates the new retina version will launch with an Intel Haswell processor, which is pretty much a given. Other rumors specs include a Thunderbolt 2 port and even possibly a 4K display, but our bets are against the latter.

9. Mac Pro, Mavericks OS Launch
Rumor: The Mac Pro and Mavericks OS will get a launch date.
Plausibility: Apple announced the Mac Pro at its Worldwide Developers Conference in June, but never gave the desktop OS model a launch date -- in fact, the website still says it's coming soon. But how soon? Reports say it will get a launch date next week (of November 15), and so will Mavericks OS -- Apple's latest-generation operating system, also announced at WWDC.

10. Apple TV Upgrades
Rumor: Apple's streaming media system is getting a refresh.
Plausibility: There was some buzz that Apple TV could get an overhaul at the iPhone event in September, so it's no surprise the rumor is getting play again. The upgrade is said to be both for the software and hardware, but isn't an entirely new system (like the long fabled Apple TV set) all together.
