Do Not Always Aim To Meet Unrealistic Deadlines

Deadlines are great for productivity. In fact, they may just be the best motivator for getting things done. However, if you're given an impossible-to-reach deadline, working your tail off to reach it may be bad for you in the long run.

There are always circumstances that come up that may require us to work over the weekend or take a 16-hour shift on occasion, it's easy for it to become the norm and wear us out. As Meridian Health Plan CIO Tom Lauzon points out:
"When you finish a project with an unrealistic deadline, your reward is another project with another unrealistic deadline."

If you're faced with an unrealistic deadline from your boss, be sure to let them know your concerns as soon as possible and explain why you think it can't be done in the time frame they want. Obviously, you shouldn't try to sabotage your own project in order to prove it's not possible, but if you express concerns early and do your best work, don't be afraid to let an unrealistic deadline pass unless you want to get another one in the near future.
